We are not used to restricting the number of people who can attend a funeral. Usually, there is no guest list, no real idea of the number of mourners who will attend and no need to control that number… until now.

Funerals are one of the rare exemptions under current Covid-19 restrictions, where 30 people are permitted to gather. Weddings have been reduced to just 15 and pretty much everything else we do is now is governed by the ‘Rule of 6’.

Despite this exemption, this is causing so much heartache for grieving families so I wanted to suggest some things that may help at a difficult time…

* Ask your funeral director about the possibility of the ceremony being streamed online as many crematoriums have this facility.

* If there isn’t an in-house streaming facility, there are several companies who can do this for you. They are discreet and professional.

* Consider letting people know the route of the funeral cortege so that they may pay their respects by lining that route should they wish.

* Share the Order of Service online with people who cannot attend which will help them feel a part of the ceremony.

In the future post-COVID-19, when hopefully life as we know it gets back to so-called normal, you might want to consider some kind of memorial event where everyone who would like to can get together and share fond memories and pay their respects in person to you and your family.

I’m thinking of you and your loved ones if you find yourself having to consider the Rule of 30.
