Many people approach me after a funeral ceremony and say they didn’t realise there were different types of ceremony and how they would have a choice.
When you organise the funeral of a loved one, your funeral director will ask you who you would like to officiate at the funeral ceremony. There are various options…
Vicar; a religious ceremony
Civil Celebrant; this is what I do, and I offer a bespoke ceremony that can include anything you would like including aspects of religion or it can be non-religious
Humanist Celebrant; a non-religious ceremony
There is of course always the option of taking the funeral ceremony yourself or asking a family member or friend to lead proceedings. Although that is quite an undertaking unless the person has some experience. There is no right or wrong answer, it is most definitely about what you and your loved one would prefer.
Funerals don’t have to be religious or non-religious, they should be the way you would like them and how best it pays tribute to your loved one and helps you say your final goodbye.
If there is a particular vicar, civil celebrant or humanist celebrant you would like to use then you just need to let your funeral director know. If not, then they will suggest someone for you.
